Velda Twedt

December 20, 1929 — April 11, 2026

Velda Twedt went peacefully home to be with her Lord on Saturday April 11th at Park Gardens in Fergus Falls, MN at the age of 96. Velda was born on December 20, 1929, in Highmore, SD, to John and Hulda (Herr) Vilhauer, the fourth of eight children. She was baptized May 9th, 1930 and confirmed April 2nd, 1944, in the Christian faith. She attended school in rural Highmore, SD.

Velda worked for a time at the Anne Carlson Center for Children in Jamestown, ND. While there she met Art, who was visiting his sister, who also worked at the Center. Art and Velda were married on June 30, 1955, in Highmore SD. They made their home in rural McHenry, ND on the Twedt family farm, where they raised their four children. Velda was a hard worker and in addition to being a homemaker spent a lot of time helping with the work on the family farm. She was an avid gardener, raising many vegetables for the family and tending her many beautiful flower beds that she loved so dearly.

After moving to Fergus Falls in 2000 Velda worked as a kitchen assistant at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy from 2001-2005 before retiring. This combined her love of cooking and being around kids. She also enjoyed the comradery and friendship of her co-workers as well as the encouraging atmosphere of Hillcrest.

Velda was an active member of Gethsemane Lutheran and Bethany Free Lutheran Church, until she and Art moved to Fergus Falls and they joined Calvary Free Lutheran Church. She greatly enjoyed the fellowship and friendships she found there and was involved in numerous church activities such as quilting, helping with VBS, bringing goodies for events and being part of women's ministries. Velda enjoyed baby-sitting her grand kids and great grandkids as well as watching their programs, concerts and sporting events. Spending time with family and friends was important to her. She also spent many, many hours crocheting, doing needle point, and quilting. Velda made afghans for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many other children as well. She blessed many people with her servant's heart and her kindness.

Velda is preceded in death by her husband Art Twedt, her parents John and Hulda Vilhauer, grandson Justin Quam, her sisters Irene (Ray) Ensign, Luella (Glenn) Schimmel, Ruby (Howard) Cables, LaVerna Hirsch, brothers Marvin Vilhauer and Harvy (Joni) Vilhauer, sister-in-law Isabel (Cliff) Johnson, Agnus (Chuck) Howard, brother-in-laws Gordon (Ardis) Twedt, Marcus Twedt, and Art Schneider.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Park Gardens for the care and compassion shown to Velda during the years she spent there. Thank you also to Vivie Hospice for their kindness and support.
