Rudolph Hasbargen

July 26, 1942 — January 22, 2025

Rudolph "Rudy" Hasbargen, 82, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota died Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota.

Rudolph Einer Hasbargen was born on July 26, 1942, to Rudolph and Ida (Hempel) Hasbargen in Graceville, Minnesota. He was raised on his family farm in Traverse County and attended the Country School District 17 through eighth grade and graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, Minnesota in 1960. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1964 with degrees in Agricultural Economics and Business Management. Rudy also served in the National Guard.

On August 12, 1967, Rudy married Kathi Duffing at Immanuel Monson Lutheran Church in Traverse County, Minnesota. The couple lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota for four years before moving to Fergus Falls in 1971, where they rooted themselves. Rudy dedicated his professional career to supporting farmers in and around Ottertail County while working for the Production Credit Association (later AgCountry Farm Credit Services), where he retired as President. Following his retirement, he continued assisting farmers with money management and resource allocation through the extension services program of Northland Community & Technical College.

Rudy was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 40 years, serving in numerous leadership roles, committees and bible study groups. He was an avid fan of Minnesota sports, mostly the Twins, the Golden Gophers and especially the Vikings. Rudy enjoyed deer hunting near his boyhood home and the occasional fishing trip on Lake of the Woods and West Battle Lake, Minnesota, where he and Kathi had a summer cabin, which became the backdrop for countless hours of joyful family gatherings. For many winters, Rudy and Kathi escaped the cold and snow of Minnesota for the sun and canyons of Tucson, Arizona, where they happily welcomed many friends and family, and Rudy discovered a new interest - hiking.

Rudy was smart and thoughtful with a warm smile and a quick, hearty laugh. In everything, though, he centered himself around two North Stars - his Christian faith and his family - which together defined how he spent his time and resources. He cherished studying the Bible and learning about his God and Savior. He found foundational support and solace in the Gospel message. With his family, Rudy engaged fully and found true joy in time spent together. He was a loving provider and gave freely whatever was needed, or even just helpful, to lighten the load or smooth the path. Most defining, he was the caregiver, rock and eternal partner to Kathi, and he dedicated his life to living out his love for and commitment to her. Rudy's care for others was his Christian faith in action.

Rudy is survived by his daughter, Amy Hasbargen (Lance Breiland) of Minneapolis and son, Daniel Hasbargen (Kimberly) of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Eva and Bianca Breiland and Joshua (Amber), David and Paul Hasbargen; great-grandsons, Aiden and Liam Hasbargen; brothers, Wallace (Becky) Hasbargen of Wheaton and Fredrick (Karen) Hasbargen of Wheaton; and numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife; parents; sisters, Inez Schuttoff and Ruth Hasbargen; brothers, Alfred, Chester, Ernest, Paul, Henry, Vern, Edward and Roy Hasbargen; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
