July 31, 1939 — June 14, 2022

Palmer “Jim” Mathieson, 82, of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at his residence.

Husband, father, grandfather and friend Jim Mathieson was born to Jessie and Palmer Mathieson on July 31, 1939. He grew up on farms near Ashby and Erdahl and went to school in Ashby, Elbow Lake, and Henning. He lived briefly in Minneapolis where he met his best friend and life companion, Cherrie Nelson, on a blind date. They were married August 21, 1960 at Scandia Lutheran Free Church near Morris, MN. Together they settled on a farm near Ashby where their daughters were born, Yvonne in 1963 and Lisa in 1964. Later, they settled in Fergus Falls where Jim worked as a contractor and Cherrie taught elementary school. For many years, Jim served as a corrections officer at the Otter Tail County Jail. Jim and Cherrie traveled extensively after retirement, discovering new places and forging new friendships. Their favorite destination was Norway, to which they traveled many times. He was a gifted artist and craftsman, a passion he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He formed lasting friendships over many cups of coffee. Jim is survived by and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Cherrie, his girls, Yvonne and Lisa, son-in-law Dan, grandchildren, Sam (Alexa) and Petra (Ian), sister Carolyn, extended family; and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and father. Jim would do anything for his family and was always ready to lend a hand. To honor Jim's memory please buy a friend a cup of coffee or help someone in need.
