Lon Hanson

July 13, 1949 — September 27, 2025

Lon Kirby Hanson, 76, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, passed away at his home, under Vivie hospice care, surrounded by family on 9/27/2025.

Lon was born on July 13, 1949, in Fergus Falls, to Arlo Marcus Hanson and LeVonne Elizabeth (Swenson) Hanson. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1967, continued his education at Alexandria Technical College, and was drafted into the Air Force spending two years stationed in Michigan.

On December 21, 1969, Lon married the love of his life, Susan Carol Bourassa, at the Episcopal Church in Fergus Falls.

Over the years, Lon and Susan made their home in Dalton, Fergus Falls, New York Mills, Ottertail, and ultimately back in Fergus Falls. Lon built a long and respected career with Otter Tail Power Company, where he worked for more than 30 years, retiring as a Service Representative for New York Mills and the surrounding area.

Dedicated to his community, Lon was an active member of the New York Mills Lions Club for over 20 years, served 13 years on the NYM Fire Department, and was involved with the Minnesota Lakes Woodturners Association, the NYM Chamber of Commerce, and the local golfing community.

Lon's greatest joys were found outdoors and with his family. He loved woodturning, Canadian and local fishing (especially ice fishing), hunting, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, bowling, downhill skiing, and enjoying water sports with his children and grandchildren. His enthusiasm for adventure and the outdoors created lasting memories for all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arlo M Hanson; brother, Mark Hanson; sister, Susan Olson; in-laws, Warren and Audrey Bourassa; brother-in-law, Mike Barker.

Lon is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Susan; his mother, LeVonne Hanson; his children, Jennifer Martinson (Trent Eineichner), Jamie Adams (Travis Adams), and Kevin Hanson; grandchildren, Tate Martinson, Kiah Martinson, Rainy Eineichner, Brenden Adams, and Alyssa Adams; great-grandchild, Everson Anderson; sisters, Myrna (Jim) VanWatermulen and Elizabeth (Chad) Nelson; along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Lon will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor, his dedication to family and community, and his passion for the outdoors.
