David Sagerhorn

August 24, 1971 — May 5, 2024

David "Dave" Joseph Sagerhorn, age 52, loving son, husband, dad, and papa, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Essentia Health in Fargo after a successful triple bypass.

Dave was born to Georgia Jean Sagerhorn on August 24, 1971. From early on, Dave had a very strong and unique bond with his grandparents. He would tag along with them when they spent time at Bob's Tavern. He enjoyed spending time at their summer cabin on Wall Lake. When he was ten years old, his cousin, Tommy, joined the family and over the years they grew to be more like brothers. Dave loved baseball (a common interest he shared with Tommy), backyard games with friends, playing catch with Tommy, watching the MN Twins, and the Chicago Cubs. He shared that he once pretended to be sick so he could stay home to watch the Cubs season opener.

Dave attended Cleveland Elementary, where he met his future wife in kindergarten. He played football, basketball, and baseball through his school years. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1990.

He worked at Hardees while he was in school. After graduation he worked at Stop-n-Go, Pizza Hut, and MinnKota Recycling before he landed his job at the City of Fergus Falls in 1999. He began as a garbage picker and most recently drove the one-arm garbage truck.

Dave has always had a passion for sports. He played for several softball teams and played in many tournaments. Reading newspapers, watching ESPN, and following sports on social media was something he did every day. He was always current on the latest news, injuries, trades, records, etc. Paying extra close attention to the MN Vikings, Twins, and Timberwolves. His love of sports and his gift to easily connect with children led him to coaching. It was something he enjoyed greatly. His teams became "his kids." He was currently coaching Otters JV Baseball.

Dave truly had a gift when it came to children. He adored them and they adored him. Being a kid at heart, kids always gravitated to him. He loved to joke with them. He had a sense of humor and his laugh could be heard throughout the room. He usually sat at the "kiddie table" at parties and holidays. For the past three years, he was privileged to be "Papa Dave" to his four grandchildren. He loved that role and was so good at it.

Dave married the love of his life, Tessa Jo Taylor, on June 9, 2000. He became step-father to Jordan and Dillon Sillerud, although he never thought of them as "step" (he hated that term). They were his boys. On October 24, 2000, he and Tessa were blessed with their son, Aaron Joseph. September 8, 2003, they welcomed Justis Taylor to complete their family. He was the best Dad. So proud of his boys. He loved them BIG. They enjoyed snuggling and watching WWE, Pixar, Disney, and Marvel movies together. Being a husband and father was his greatest joy and he excelled at both.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Warren and Betty Sagerhorn and his uncle, Patrick Sagerhorn.

He leaves behind his wife of 23 years, Tessa; his four sons, Jordan (Joey Nelson), Dillon (Morgan Halvorson), Aaron, and Justis; four grandchildren, Leyla, Dexter, Oliver, and Sylas; mother, Georgia; in-laws, Gene and Carol Taylor; sister-in-law, Keri and her husband, Paul Buchholz; two nephews, Chance and Carson Buchholz; one niece, Taylor Buchholz, along with many friends and extended family.

Blessed be the memory of David Sagerhorn. Loved forever and Never forgotten.

"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always here, still loved, still missed and forever dear. - Alex MacLean
