Truman Marvin Markegard

Truman Marvin Markegard, 104, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Pioneer Cottages in Fergus Falls, MN.

He was born on December 5, 1912, in Rushford, MN, to John and Marie (Bakken) Markegard.

He was baptized and confirmed at Arendahl Lutheran Church, in Peterson, MN. After graduating from Rushford High School in 1932, he went on to obtain an accounting diploma from Winona Business College in 1933.

Truman married Irene Buchholz in 1936, and had three children. In 1972, Truman married Gladyce Neilson.

He came to Fergus Falls in 1933 to work for his uncle, O.C. Boyum, then purchased a store/gas station on Vernon which he called Truman’s Place. He then worked at Mahler and Straus Implement Co. until 1942 when he went to work for the government doing construction during the war, working on the Alaskan Highway, earning money to purchase a building on Washington Avenue. He got the franchise from Studebaker and had the Studebaker dealership which he called Truman Motors from around 1946 to 1954. While in business, he sold Studebakers, used vehicles, had a fleet of dump trucks that he leased out, and was very proud of the delivery trucks he sold to Park Region Bakery.

In 1953, Truman joined Olson Enstad Larson Company, selling real-estate until 1968. He was an officer of the Northland Development Company which worked to develop the Northland Park Addition and the Woodland Heights Addition, as well as building many homes in Fergus Falls. Around 1957 to 1959 he appraised land for where Interstate 94 now is. He had been self-employed since, and spent his later years/winters in California and Texas.

Truman was on the Bethlehem Church council, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Elks, and was one of the original stockholders at Security State Bank.

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Donna Dunker; brothers, Obed and Kenneth; and two sisters, Myrtle and Marian.

Survivors include his daughter, Marlys (Daryl) Johnson of Fergus Falls; son, Marc of Sun City, AZ; grandchildren, Corey (Sue) Johnson of Rapid City, SD, Jeff Johnson of Dilworth, Mick (Nita) Johnson of Andover, DJ Johnson of Fergus Falls, Marcia (Larry) Morrison of San Antonio, TX, Gary (Dina) Dunker of Plano, TX, Susan (Tom) Coyle of Sequin, TX, Marc Royal of Billings, MT, and Todd Royal of Worland, WY; sister, Eleanor Laumb of Rushford; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorials are preferred to the Bethlehem Cemetery Association, or organization of the donor’s choice.
