Norine Rachel "Nonie" Erway

Norine Rachel “Nonie” Erway, 77, of Underwood, died Friday, June 17, 2016, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.
Norine was born in Bradford, PA, on November 19, 1938, the daughter of John and Rachel (Thompson) Keesler. She was raised in Smethport, PA, where she graduated from Smethport High School in 1957.
Norine moved to Minnesota in 1958 and married Leo Braun in 1960, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Trier, MN. They raised their seven children on the family farm.
Norine used her talents as a cook and as a seamstress for many different businesses and also owned her own re-upholstery business.
In 1984, she moved back to her childhood town, where she married Leland Erway in 1984. There she was a coordinator for the Smethport Senior Center and a member of the Smethport EMS Squad, where she was said to drive a mean ambulance.
In 1994, Norine came back to Minnesota and moved to Underwood in 2001, where for several years, you could find her smiling face behind the counter of The Undermart.
In her fifties, Norine picked up painting and loved sharing her art with her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and doing crafts. She also had a marvelous sense of humor, a big caring heart and a generous soul.
You didn’t have a name with Norine. It was always “sweetie pie, pumpkin, honey girl, baby cakes or you kids,” even if you were twenty years older than her. Many also called her “mom.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rachel Keesler; a daughter, Vanessa; a son, Russell; a sister, Dianne Ferguson; and two infant brothers.
Norine is survived by her children, Rachelle (Forrest) Hanson of Underwood, Ralph Braun of Cannon Falls, Rodney (Lori) Braun of Cottage Grove, Remy Braun of Carthage, MO and Roger (Laura) Braun of Fergus Falls; seventeen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and another one expected in December; her sister, Gail Ladlee of Henrico, NC; and several nieces, nephews and other family members.
