Maxine Lucyle Rieman

December 30, 1927 — October 30, 2016

Maxine Lucyle Rieman, age 88, of Hopkins, MN, died Sunday, October 30, 2016, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls, MN.

Maxine Lucyle (Howell) Rieman was born on December 30, 1927, the daughter of Carl and Mande (Berkness) Howell in Willmar, MN. She attended school in Willmar and graduated in 1945. After high school graduation, Maxine moved to the Twin Cities and worked at Sister Kenny Institute. She met Richard E. Rieman on a blind date and they were united in marriage on April 22, 1950.

Maxine and Richard lived in Hopkins, MN for most of their married life. They adopted two children: Mark Scott Rieman and Sheila Jo (Rieman) Rodning. Maxine worked as a secretary at Hopkins West Junior High School for many years. In 1992, Maxine and Dick decided to purchase a lake cabin in Ottertail County with their daughter, Sheila and son-in-law, Mark Rodning. They celebrated many special occasions together including their 50th Wedding Anniversary at The Pier on Ottertail Lake. Uncle Mark also joined in on this fun when he returned home to Minnesota after servicing in the Navy for 15 years. Their Cabin, otherwise known as R&R, was a little slice of heaven for the Rieman and Rodning family on East Lost Lake. Grandma Max and Grandpa Dick spent weekends with their grandchildren Ashley, Brian and Bill (Rodning) fishing, playing, boating, tubing, enjoying campfires, reading, singing and slamming screen doors.

Christmas was Maxine’s favorite holiday. Maxine was full blooded Norwegian, so naturally she would serve homemade Chow Mein for Christmas dinner. Maxine was an original. Some would say she had moxie. She had courage, determination and a great sense of humor. She had courage to teach her children the Serenity Prayer and determination to recover from a major stroke at age 60.

Maxine lived in Fergus Falls or the “One Horse Town” as she called it, for the last five years. She kept a candy dish next to her chair at the Alcott Manor and her family kept her in supply of Hershey’s Chocolate Drops and jelly beans. She cared about the world and kept up with the news. She attended the Light and Life church at the Broen Home and enjoyed Pastor Ken Austin’s services while he was alive. Maxine was a devoted mother, wife, grandma, aunt and friend.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Mandy Howell; her husband, Richard Rieman; brother, sister-in-law, and nephew: Leary, Virginia and Thomas Howell; sister and brother-in-law: Lorayne and William Buckley; parents-in-law: Martin and Gertrude Rieman; Brother-in Law and Sister-in-law: James and Laura Rieman.

Maxine is survived by her loving family: Son: Mark Rieman of Maple Plain; daughter and son-in-law: Mark and Sheila (Rieman) Rodning of Fergus Falls; Grandchildren, Ashley Rodning of St Paul; Brian Rodning and fiancé Emilyn Oehler of Moorhead and Bill Rodning of St Paul; niece and family: Karen and Larry Hodgin, Curt and Cory of Waconia; nephew and wife: Ron and Jeanine Rieman of Hopkins.
