JoAnne Haiby

JoAnne Rosella (Anderson) Haiby, 86, of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Hospitality House in Fergus Falls.

JoAnne was born May 1, 1934, to Art and Neta (Weiss) Anderson, the fifth of eight children. She was born at Doctor Satersmooens Hospital in Pelican Rapids, MN and grew up in rural Erhard. She was baptized and confirmed at Tonseth Lutheran Church in Edwards, MN. She attended District #187 country school in the Edwards area through the eighth grade, in the building which happens to now be the Ye Old Schoolhouse. At the age of 14 she moved to Fergus Falls and began working at the City Café and Bakery and also The Ranchouse. She was a homemaker and raised six children.

On January 20, 1952, she married Eugene Dohrer, they had three sons, Gene, Jim, and Jack. On December 14, 1963, she married Verlyn Haiby and together they became a family of six, including Verlyn’s son, Allen. Together JoAnne and Verlyn had two daughters, Debbie and Linda, completing their family of eight.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and a Blood Donor with the American Red Cross.

JoAnne enjoyed ceramics, get togethers with her sisters and friends for Thursday lunches, flower gardens and birds. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events and activities, her lake life at Ten Mile Lake, and attending Spartan and Otter basketball games. She loved to bake and always made everyone special birthday cakes and Christmas cookies; she was a great cook and baker. She also enjoyed playing cards with granddaughters at sleepovers, especially the game 31. She enjoyed celebrating May Day, which also was her birthday, receiving May baskets from family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Verlyn; her parents; sisters, Leone Backstrom, Verna Mae Duenow, and Betty Kohlhase; brothers, Elroy and Laurel Anderson; grandson, Michael Haiby, and two great-granddaughters, Averee Lynn and Hannah Jax.

JoAnne is survived by her children, Gene (Vicki) Dohrer of Fergus Falls, Jim (Mary Gnadt) Dohrer of Pelican Rapids, Jack (Linda) Dohrer of Fergus Falls, Allen (Mary) Haiby of Fergus Falls, Debbie (Mark) Schultz of Fergus Falls, and Linda (Bill) Zumwalde of Fergus Falls; 16 grandchildren, Amber, Ashley, Alison, Kelli, Justin, Jessica, Ryan, Linzee, Jeremy, Jason, Aimee, Mallory, Megan, Craig, and Steven; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorene Nelson of Fergus Falls; brother, Ken Anderson of Fergus Falls, and many special nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her Hospitality House family.

Public Visitation: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
There will be a private family service, with a Live-stream at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.
