December 5, 1928 — May 2, 2019

Forrest “Frosty” Helgerson, 90, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.

Forrest was born to Helge and Julia (Berkman) Helgerson on December 5, 1928, in Mobridge, SD. He grew up on the family farm while attending country school through 8th grade. He then moved to McIntosh, SD, where he attended high school playing basketball and football, graduating in 1947. After high school he went to work building grain elevators by Lemmon, SD.

In 1951 Forrest was drafted into the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. He spent a month in the hospital with a wounded leg, then returned back to the front lines of war. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his injury and service in the war. In 1953, upon his discharge from the Army, Forrest attended Wahpeton School of Science studying for diesel mechanic.

On August 25, 1955, Forrest was united in marriage to Delores Maurer in Breckenridge, MN. Forrest and Delores lived in Wahpeton until he completed his education; they then moved to Aberdeen, SD, where he was employed as a mechanic with Midland Motors. In 1973, the mechanics at Midland Motors went on strike so Forrest moved his family to Breckenridge, MN, where he worked at Krebs Motor. In 1993, Forrest retired and he and Delores moved to their lake home permanently.

Forrest enjoyed fishing, hunting and carpentry, especially, making picture frames. His grandchildren were very special to him and he loved spending time with them.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Delores in April 2014; son-in-law, Mark Lemke; two sisters, Patricia Pierce and Noma Olsen; three brothers, Russell Helgerson, Norman Helgerson and Stanley Helgerson.

Survivors include daughter, Tammy Lemke of Oak Grove; son, Brian Helgerson of Detroit Lakes; two grandchildren, Melissa (fiancé, Logan Ferguson) Lemke and Sarah Lemke.

A private family graveside will be held at Campbell Cemetery, Campbell, MN, at a later date.
