Robert Hellerstedt, 87, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, November 28, 2014, at Lake Region Healthcare.
He was born June 6, 1927, in Wheaton, the son of Verner and Minnie (Larson) Hellerstedt. He attended school in Wheaton, and worked as a farm laborer in the Wheaton area. At the age of 16, he joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. He returned to Fergus Falls as a “Tinner” in sheet metal fabrication. Robert joined the US Army, serving in the infantry, stationed in Korea. Upon his discharge, he returned to Fergus Falls.
On October 27, 1956, he married Rosemary “Mary” Lehn in Elizabeth. The couple moved to Minneapolis where he attended printing school and became a lino-type operator. They lived in Milaca, Long Prairie and Perham. While in Perham, he was a Dairy Herd Inspector and worked for a turkey farm. His retirement brought them back to Fergus Falls, where he has lived since 1999.
Robert loved to collect old coins, was a woodworker, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, loved to fish, do puzzles, play computer and board games ,talk, was a joker and a good father. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 30, the VFW Post 612 and Knights of Columbus, all of Fergus Falls.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Mary, who died in 2005; and two brothers, Emery and Merlyn.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam (Larry) Kolstad of South Carolina; a son, Douglas (Renae) Hellerstedt of Grand Forks, ND; five grandchildren, Nicole Nance, Evan Kolstad, Cory Kolstad, Gena Hellerstedt and Connor Hellerstedt; one great-grandchild, Aubrey Nance; stepmother, Mavis Hellerstedt of Fergus Falls; three sisters, Marlene Nelson of Ashby, Linda (Stephen) Fose of Arkansas and Janice Hammer of Fergus Falls; a brother, Gary (Bonita) Hellerstedt of Moorhead; a sister-in-law, Dottie Hellerstedt of Hawaii, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at the funeral home with a 6:30 prayer service and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Fergus Falls
