John Richard Kraning

John Richard “Dick” Kraning, 90, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, November 29, 2012, at his home.

He was born August 13, 1922, in LaMoure, North Dakota, the son of John and Mary (Schneider). He graduated from LaMoure High School. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, attended Radio School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and then was in Washington DC, receiving top secret training in Cryptographic repair and installation of code machines. He was stationed for two years in the CBI Theatre in Calcutta, India as a Cryptographic Repairman during World War II, serving until 1946. Upon his discharge he returned to LaMoure where he worked construction with his father.

On May 3, 1949, he married Irene V. Haro in Wahpeton, North Dakota. They moved to Denver, Colorado where he attended Watchmakers School. In 1951 the couple returned to LaMoure where they operated Kraning Jewelry. In 1967 they moved to Fergus Falls where they purchased Hauberg Jewelry. John and Irene worked side by side running Kraning Jewelry until their retirement when their son, Rick, took over the family business.

While in LaMoure John served as a volunteer fireman and was active in the American Legion. In Fergus Falls he was involved in the Fergus Falls Lions, was a life member of the VFW, and was a member of the Elks. In later years he assisted with the Fergus Falls VFW Walk of Flags. In 2007 John was thrilled to be one of the WWII Honor Flight veterans to go on the first flight to Washington DC to see the WWII Memorial, accompanied by his grandson, Kyle.

John loved to fish with family and friends, and also enjoyed woodworking and yard work.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Margaret Allison and Marie Wickert, and a brother, Edward Kraning.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Irene, of Fergus Falls; sons, Cal (Barb) Kraning of Valley City, ND, and Rick Kraning of Fergus Falls; a granddaughter, Jackie (Tim) Scott of Colorado; a grandson, Kyle Kraning of Fergus Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: 10:30 am Monday, December 3, 2012 at First Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls
