Eileen "Sandy" Akers

Eileen “Sandy” Akers, 67, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in the care of Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, North Dakota, after suffering from a life altering stroke.

She was born April 3, 1946, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Raymond and Gyda (Floen) Quam and was the only girl in a family of five. She had two daughters, Heather and Jennifer.

Sandy worked many years as a caregiver at the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center and at Pioneer Home in Fergus Falls. Later in life she was able to live out her pending dream to go back to school for an associate degree at North Dakota State College of Science as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, and relocated to Jasper, Indiana, and later Tripp, South Dakota, until her rheumatoid arthritis caused her to retire early. She was a fun loving person to work with.

Her passion in life was caring for her dogs, her grandchildren, and eventually her mom. She had a love of sewing and creating beautiful children’s clothing and blankets. She added a creative touch to everything she did, and was always crafting. She loved her “coffee ladies” and the catch up times with these former work buddies.

Preceding her in death were her father, Raymond, and a brother, Russell.

Survivors include her mother, Gyda Quam, Fergus Falls; her two daughters, Heather Akers Osborn of Fergus Falls and Jennifer Akers Lemke of Fergus Falls; four grandchildren: Amanda Lemke, Isaiah Lemke, Abby Lemke, and Sam Korinek; three brothers, Bob (Edie) Quam, Neil Quam, and Doug Quam, all of Fergus Falls; a sister-in-law, Kathy Quam of Cottage Grove; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 1 p.m. Friday, September 13, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls

Interment: Knollwood Memorial Gardens in Fergus Falls
