Claudia Amborg Backen

Claudia Amborg Backen, 68, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at her home with her family by her side.
Claudia was born September 24, 1945 in Detroit Lakes, to Leonard Oliver and Ida Cecilia (Dalager) Skunberg. She lived the first three years of her life in Pelican Rapids, before moving southwest of Erhard to Sunnyside Farm. She grew up and attended country school west of Erhard, and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1963. In 1966 she completed her Registered Nursing Degree from Minneapolis General Hospital.
Claudia was married to Winston John Backen on September 7, 1968, in Erhard. Claudia and Winston lived in Minneapolis early in their marriage, then moved to Fergus Falls in 1970 to start a family.
During her career as an RN, Claudia worked at St. Ansgars Hospital, Moorhead, MN; Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina; Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls; Health Occupational teacher, Fergus Falls School District 544; and Regional Treatment Center, Fergus Falls. She also worked as a nursing facility surveyor for the Minnesota Department of Health, until her retirement.
Claudia was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving on church council. She was also an active member of the PTA, Minnesota Nurses Association, and Minnesota Teachers Association.
She greatly enjoyed quilting, watching Minnesota Twins games, reading, listening to Lori Line. She had a special place in her heart for her two granddaughters, Brooke and Carly.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Leonard and Ida Skunberg and her mother and father-in-law, Roy and Bernice Backen.
Survivors include her husband, Winston, who was the most important person in her life, through his love, encouragement and care, she was able to live at her home after a major stroke in 2002; her children, Craig (Kelly) Backen of Chatfield, MN, Jill (Odin Beard) Backen of Fergus Falls, MN; grandchildren, Brooke and Carly Backen; sisters, Marlys (Ernie) Bahnmiller of Big Sandy, MT, Pegge (Erik Cross) Skunberg of Lake Nebagamon, WI; brothers, Lowell Skunberg of Erhard, MN and Chester, MT, Lenny Skunberg of Salmon, ID and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 pm Thursday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls

Interment: Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN
