Clarence L. Gowin, 99, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, September 2, 2015 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
Clarence Lester Gowin was born September 30, 1915, in Victor, SD, to Orman and Maggie (Bresnahan) Gowin. He attended school through the 8th grade. He was enlisted in the U.S. Army from July of 1941 to November of 1945. He served during WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea. He received many awards for service, including the American Theater Service Medal, the Liberation Medal with Bronze Service Star for good conduct, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the Victory Medal.
On January 15, 1941, he married Florence Margaret Hunkins in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Together they had three children. He was a dairy farmer and between 1958 and 1966, they helped raise 23 foster children in their home.
He enjoyed reading, watching Minnesota Twins baseball, and visiting with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence, in 2007; four brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by his children, James (Sharon) Gowin of Battle Lake, Gene (Alice) Gowin of Austin, Arkansas, and Joyce (Paul) Iverson of Dawson; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, George (LaVonne) Gowin of Mesa, Arizona.
