Alvin Robert "Bob" Hemmingson

Alvin Robert “Bob” Hemmingson, age 85, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, September 26, 2016, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
Bob was born August 13, 1931, the son of Frank and Evelyn (Ness) Hemmingson in Racine, WI. He graduated from William Horlick High School in Racine, attended the University of Wisconsin-Racine for one year, and graduated from Dana College in Blair, NE. He did additional graduate studies at the University of Minnesota and completed a MA degree in library science at the University of Denver. His working career included ten years of teaching economics at Augsburg College and was the Director of the Fergus Falls Public library for twenty-seven years.
On May 21, 1960, Bob married Alta Christiansen and together they had two daughters, Ann and Susan.
In his work as library director, Bob was instrumental in the founding of Viking Library System and served as its initial director. He also provided leadership for the building of a new library facility in 1986.
Bob was active in community activities, particularly at First Lutheran Church, where he served a term as president of the congregation and as a Bethel Series teacher. After retirement he served on the City Planning Commission, the board of Lakeland Hospice where he was president for one year, and the board of the Community Food Shelf.
By nature, Bob was curious and studied about a multitude of things. Science, religion, politics and history, especially Abraham Lincoln, were topics of interest. Video courses were his favorite activity in retirement, apart from conversation with friends in a coffee shop.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta Hemmingson; and two sisters.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Ann Villanueva of Moorhead and Susan (David) Peterson of Maple Grove; three granddaughters, Sarah, Alyssa and Ashley; and numerous other family and friends.
